Pre-Thanksgiving Ooohs, Post-Thanksgiving Aaaahs

Exactly one week before Thanksgiving, Society Hill Garden Club of Breton Bay hosted a Community Holiday Kick-Off to thank neighbors and friends for their support of the club's beautification initiatives and projects, and to kick off the holiday season with beautiful table settings and centerpieces.
The event, held at Avenmar Community Center, was a big success as Garden Club members welcomed friends and guests who admired the beautiful table displays and enjoyed delectable snacks
provided by Garden Club members.

Too many good things to try!

 Pat Carney's Thanksgiving table setting

Linda Carlson's drama for the table!

The Club invited local florists, David's, Kenny's and Towne Florist, to create centerpieces to coordinate with Club member table settings.

Kenny's was undaunted by a picnic setting of blue and green, and provided a beautiful basket featuring delphiniums.

Towne was confronted by a delicate peach china pattern passed down by a member's great aunt, and came through with a lush red and deep orange arrangement crisscrossed with strapping green fronds - both a traditional take on the color theme and a modern arrangement to bring the setting into 2011.

David's provided a dramatic arrangement to address both a modern china pattern and a mid-century modern serving platter containing the centerpiece (apologies to Club member Barbara Hak for cutting her off!).

Club Member Pat Carney suggested a "non-floral" alternative for those with allergies.

White lillies, blush roses and green spider mums used to emphasize the white and silver theme inspired by a member's china, crystal and silver.

 Gloria Brady's family Johnstone stoneware

Barbara Hak's incredibly delicate hand-painted Japanese child's tea set

Polly House captured the fu and the nostalgia of "Coca Cola Christmas" of years past.

Everyone who participated did an outstanding job of presenting beautiful table tops to encourage Club members and guests to make beauty a priority at their tables this holiday season!

Pat Carney's gorgeous Montclair!

Noritake china from 1930's Alabama, with an Italian blue overlay and chocolate brown silk runner - is that too "out there"??

On a weekday night it is come-as-you-are :)

New faces, including male faces :), were heartily welcomed!

Thank you to all the Club members who provided table settings, including Barbara Hak, Jenny Matlack, Susan Tyner, Polly House, Linda Carlson, Pat Carney, Gloria Brady, Emerita Hayward & Betsy Hundert, Alicia Smith and Anne Rullman - did I forget anyone?? It was a delight and an honor to be part of such creative and beautiful company!

The Best Kind of Meeting - Tasting Wine!

Visiting the home of Slack Winery, Jubilee Farm, and tasting Slack's award-winning wines was the reward for the Garden Club members who took the trip.

Garden Club members and their guests tasted the first-ever Maryland Methode Champenoise sparkling wine, to debut by Slack next month. Get your Christmas orders in!

It was a delightful opportunity to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Melissa and Chris Georgiou!

The serenity of Jubilee Farm as the sun was setting, with the pristine air and barely-warm sun, was magic!

Row covers protect the vines as they start the post-harvest hibernation.

Winemaker Tucker O'Brien-Grube graciously explained the wine-making machinery.

Club members and their guests certainly know more now about wine-making....

...next up: learning about wine-TASTING :) but first - clarity, color, aroma, and finally, taste!

one of those aerating-gadget thingies

Karen and Maggie deep in discussion

Highly entertained by Alicia's dry wit ;)

NOTE: St. Mary’s Garden Club volunteers accepting entries will not accept anything after 8pm, and it takes time to accept and catalog entries, as entries must be passed through a couple of stations, and must be signed by a GC volunteer before the exhibitor leaves. STRONGLY recommend getting your entries to the fair no later than , as volunteers reserve the right to decline to accept your entries as it gets closer to .

Let the Blue-Ribbon Dreaming Begin!

Give a day or so, you have about 30 days now to buy the plants you want to exhibit and get them in the ground and growing, to qualify them for the St. Mary's County Fair Horticultural Division guidelines, which require that entries be in the grower's possession for at least 90 days.

That 90-deadline is about June 23. That means you have the next 30 days to shop for the plants, bulbs, seeds, etc. you want to enter, find the best specimens and get them in the ground, so that you can worry over them for the 90 days after that - and hopefully, bring home the blue ribbons you will deserve after all that work!

Let the gardening BEGIN!

Passionate, joyful, insatiable - just a few of the adjectives to describe those who love to garden. In our community, energetic and enthusiastic gardeners share seeds, sprouts and divisions, along with friendship, experience and life. How blessed we are to have this opportunity - to care for and improve the earth, to share its abundance and to delight in its beauty! Let's get digging!
